Soot Generator

The soot generator allows controlled soot loading of monolithic particulate filters. Heart of the system is the commercially available soot generator Mini Cast 5201 by Jing aerosol. This propane torch itself  allows the precisely control of the stoichiometry of the fuel gas and the carbon black particles size thus the soot mass flow (50 mg / h) can be adjust. The produced exhaust gas is passed over the heated sample receptacle, which allows the incorporation of monolithic samples up to a diameter of 2.3 cm and a length of 25 cm. The soot process is monitored by measuring the back pressure.

Chamber Furnace

  • Glass High-Temperature Chamber Furnace Nabertherm  HT 40/17

    With a furnace volume of 40 dm3 and a maximum temperature of 1700 °C, the Nabertherm HT 40/17 is particularly suitable for the production of different silicate and non-silicate glasses. Furthermore "Entbinderungen", sintering and directed crystallisation can be achieved.

  • Chamber Furnace Nabertherm N7/H

For the preparation of porous glasses, whether in the form of membranes, beads or powders, a thermal treatment of the starting glass is necessary to set the pore sizes. Further, powder and balls can be sintered to different moldings to generate bimodal pore structures. The four Nabertherm N7 / H chamber furnaces are usable to a maximum temperature of 1280°C and have a chamber volume of 7 dm3.

Diamond & Wire Disc Saw Model 15

The Wire Disc Saw Model 15 is with its two diffrent saw modi a convertible device. The classic mode enables blade cuts to a depth up to 45 mm and can be used to separate many materials and moldings. Furthermore, a diamond-set saw wire can be used with a thickness of 0.3 mm to produce fine cuts.

Particle Size Determination: CILAS 1064 Lasergranulometer

This device is a particle size analyzer in the maximum measuring range from 0.04 to 2500 µm. It has an excellent sample dispersion and stable measurement technology with ease of use. The instrument contains a patented optical bench. The CILAS 1064 is additionally equipped with a multiple laser arrangement. The device version is for wet measurements (L version), dry measurements with newly developed DJD option (D version), as well as combination devices for wet and dry measurements (LD version) available.

DR-UV/Vis Perkin Elmer Lambda 650

Using this table spectrometer powders with a particle size <300 μm as well as monoliths can be examined. It has a resolution of 0.17 nm to 5 nm and a wavelength range of 190 nm to 900 nm.

Solid Phase FTIR Bruker Vector 22

This infrared spectrometer includes an ATR-unit as well as a DTGS-detector. The maximum resolution is 2 cm-1 and a wavelenght range of 600 cm-1 to 4.500 cm-1.

Helium-Pycnometer Pycnomatic ATC

The Pycnomatic ATC represents a full-automatic device for materials characterization in terms of volume and density measurements. It applies the technique of helium displacement to measure the real density of porous solids and powders. Due to the thermostatic control and the maximum pressure deviation of less than 0.01 mbar you can get results within an accuracy of 0.01% of the sample volume.

ICP-OES Perkin Elmer Optima 8000

The unit Optima ™ 8000 is a dual view ICP-OES with full wavelength range-CCD array detector, inductively coupled plasma and microwave digestion. Using optical emission spectroscopy the composition of different solid materials such as Si, Al, Ti or Zr oxides can be determined.

Inverse gaschromatograph Perkin Elmer Clarus® 580

The Device Clarus® 580 is a high-quality gas chromatograph from PerkinElmer®. Two parallel arranged columns allow simultaneous measurements of two different samples under the same conditions. Within the temperature range of 10°C up to 450°C it is also possible to use high boiling probe molecules. The available Adscientis SARL software allows to use your own samples as column material with the principle of the inverse gas chromatography. This way you can characterize the physico-chemical properties of unknown materials. The IGC has the power to determine some of the properties which are more difficult to measure such as surface energies, surface acidity/basicity/polarity, diffusion kinetics, surface heterogenity and nanoroughness.

Mercury Porosimeter Quantachrome Pascal 440

The Pascal 440 device is a high-pressure porosimeter, which reaches a maximum pressure of 400 MPa. It is particularly suitable for ceramics, sintered metals, very hard materials and in general for all solids having a porosity in the micrometer range. The Pascal method automatically determines the correct print speed with respect to the pores to be examined as well as the actual mercury-penetration, whereby dead times are eliminated in the analysis.

Nitrogen sorption

Using the devices Micromeritics ASAP 2000/2010 (Accelerated Surface Area and porosimetry system) and Thermo Scientific Surfer, surface (BET) and porosity measurements on various types of solids are determined on the basis of gas adsorption theory. The Micromeritics ASAP 2010 system is equipped with an analyzer with two sample preparation ports and an analysis port, a control module and an interface controller. In addition, the Micromeritics ASAP 2010 Software enables the automatically analyzes and collecting of a variety of analytical reports.

PF-Reactor

Pump operated continous liquid flow reactor for oxidation of hydrocarbons

This plug flow reactor (PFR) is filled with catalyst particles (MOFs) as a fixed bed and is used for the determination of conversion of hydrocarbons. The liquid phase is passed through a HPLC pump through the reactor. Isothermal conditions during a reaction are ensured by the furnace of the reactor.

Physisorption Autosorb iQC Quantachrome

Using the Autosorb iQC precise measurements of chemisorption and physisorption are possible. The unit has a 7-Gas Chemisorptionsmanifold and can operate at temperatures up to 1.100 °C. In addition, a programmable temperature controller with guaranteed temperature stability is integrated.

Precision annular and peripheral saw APD1

For the production of ultra-thin membranes of inorganic materials (glass and glass ceramics) special requirements are needed. Such requirements can be met by means of a precision annular. The peculiarity of this saw is that the cutting edge is situated in the inner of the saw blade. Due to high rigidity of the saw blade, it is possible to produce membranes with thicknesses of a few 100 microns and plane-parallel surfaces. Classically, membranes are produced with thicknesses between 0.2 and 2 mm and edge lengths up to 40 mm. Due to the automatic operation, a high throughput is possible.

SCR-System

Within the SCR system powders (d> 100 µm) can be examined for the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) by nitric oxide. The facility is equipped with a programmable temperature and gas flow control. It is possible to supply He, O2, NO, NH3, H2O and SO2 in the gas stream. The catalytically reacted gas stream can be analyzed for the concentration of NO, NO2, N2O and CO2 by a NDIR analytic system (Uras 10E, Messrs. Hartmann & Braun).

Sorption apparatus

The sorption apparatus allows the determination of the water absorption capacity and the energy storage density of thermochemical storage materials. For this purpose, a conventional laboratory amount of sample (3-15 cm³) is flowed through by a humidified air stream. Drying of the samples is carried out in a dry air stream at up to 110 ° C.

Synthetic Exhaust Gas Apparatus (SEGA)

Using the SEG apparatus monolithic catalysts with a max. sample length of 21 cm and a sample cross-section of 2.2 cm can be analysed. In an inert steel reactor at temperatures up to max. 750 ° C, various gases such as N2, O2, H2O (g) as well as NH3, NO, CO, C3H6, NO2 as test gases are set at a reactor pressure regulation from 1-8 atm. Furthermore, the device is equipped with an on-line FTIR analysis, a concentration determination at one-second intervals to the sub-ppm range (depending on species), an oxygen sensor and an automatic controlling program.

Temperature Programmed Desorption (TPD)

Using the TPD method it is possible to observe desorbed molecules from a surface when the surface temperature is increased. In addition, the acid density of solids can be determined.

Temperature Programmed Reduction (TPR)

The TPR method is used to study the oxidation of metals, the temperature window of the reduction range or the H2 consumption. The temperature program may be selected in a range of 60 - 850 ° C at a heating rate of 5 - 15 K⋅min-1.

Thermal Conductivity

The TPS 1500 (Hot Disk AB) enables to characterize the thermal conductivity, the thermal diffusion and the specific heat capacity of bulk samples. The determination of these parameters is based on the DIN EN ISO 22007-2. Sample dimensions of at least 3 mm x 13 mm x 13 mm are required. The measuring range for the thermal conductivity lies between 0,01 and 400 W/mK, for the thermal diffusion between 0,1 and 100 mm2/s and for the specific heat capacity < 5 MJ/m3K.

Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA)

With the help of this device, the thermal decomposition, thermal effects or the phase transformation of solids under an inert gas, air or O2 / He atmosphere can be examined. For analyzes are used a microbalance, a thermal detector and a MS quadrupole.
